Anyone can do this! And EVERYONE should do it. You don't need to pay someone to SEO for you. There are a few things that really kick up the SEO a notch. But the #1 way to boost your SEO on Squarespace is to add ALT text. Once I show you, you'll be all. "OMG, that's it? It's so easy."  

Search engines use it to identify the content of a page. Adding alt text to images is literally the SIMPLEST + QUICKEST way to give your site an SEO boost and make it more accessible.

ALT text also helps screen readers or browsers if an image disabled or if they are OFFLINE when viewing. If a browser can't display the image, the alt text will display instead.

  • Add a short terms that describe the image and relate to your site content.

  • Add alt text to images directly in these areas

Guide people to find you by utilizing your ALT TAGS in your Squarespace site. 


  • a short term used to refer to the ALT attribute within in the IMG tag. Any time you use an image, be sure to include an ALT tag or ALT text within the IMG tag

Alt text is text associated with an image that some browsers display instead of the image.


ADD AN Image Block

Add alt text to an Image Block.

Choose DESIGN in the image block called > Inline

Captions added in the Inline layout automatically become alt text for the image.

If your image is set to the Inline layout, and you want to add alt text but not display a caption:

  1. Add your alt text aka image name with (.) file type at the end. example > modern desktop.png

  2. Select Do Not Display Caption.

All other Image Block Design layouts other than Inline are;

  • Poster

  • Card

  • Overlap

  • Collage

  • Stack

the captions do not automatically become alt text like added a caption to Inline design, but you can add it by switching temporarily to the Inline layout:

  1. Double click the Image Block to open the image editor.

  2. Click the Design tab.

  3. Choose the Inline layout (for blocks on regular Pages only).

  4. Ensure the caption is set to Caption Below.

  5. Click Write here below the image to add your alt text.

  6. In the image editor, switch back to your preferred layout.

  7. Click APPLY to save.

You can add and edit the two text fields for the Image Block without disrupting the alt text. To adjust the alt text, switch temporarily back to the Inline layout as a quick cheat system.
